ARRI Zeiss Master Primes

ARRI Zeiss Master Primes

The Master Primes are a revolutionary and unique new generation of high speed prime lenses with more speed, more resolution, more contrast and virtually no breathing. Whenever and wherever you want to shoot the Master Primes offer a complete set of 12 lenses that cover any lighting situation, whether day or night, interior or exterior.

Developed in close collaboration between ARRI and Carl Zeiss using new manufacturing techniques, the Master Primes have aspherical glass surfaces and an improved lens coating. This has resulted in lenses with unprecedented high resolution, high contrast and low veiling glare. Even in the darkest corner at night the Master Primes can capture details other lenses cannot see, making night exteriors at wide open stops a lot easier.

By using Dual Floating Elements™, Carl Zeiss have virtually eliminated breathing while maintaining close focus performance. Most prime lenses get visibly darker in the corners, where they also loose resolution. The Master Primes exhibit an extremely even illumination across the whole Super 35 frame and retain high resolution all the way from the centre to the edge. They can deliver this optical performance wide open and at their close focus setting.

The use of aspherical elements and exotic glass types has reduced chromatic aberration. This not only improves overall image quality, but also leads to better chroma keys. Since the Master Primes have no visible optical distortion it is easier to match footage with computer-generated imagery than the footage of conventional prime lenses.

The Master Primes are Super Color Matched and the iris opening of each lens is created by at least nine high precision leaves, resulting in round and natural looking out of focus highlights on film. The lenses have an extended iris range of T1.3 to T22 to allow shooting in all situations.

All 12 lenses have the Lens Data System built-in, showing real time lens status and depth of field information either on the video assist or on a dedicated Lens Data Display.

The lenses use internal focusing, so no matter what the focus is set to they are all exactly the same length (205mm (8")). With a uniform front diameter of 114mm (4.5") and focus and iris rings all in the same position, the lens motors, follow focus and matte box can remain in exactly the same position after a lens change. The lenses also have both metre and feet scales engraved on a single focus ring. This can be easily removed and reversed to switch between metres and feet.
